Among the Jyotirlingas, the first and most renowned shrine is located in Gujarat. This sacred place is described in the Skanda Purana. Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters, all of whom were married to the Moon (Chandra). Among them, Chandra showed special affection toward Rohini. Angered by this partiality, Daksha cursed Chandra, as a result of which the Moon lost his radiance and luster. Seeking relief from the curse, Chandra came to this sacred place along with Rohini and worshipped the Sparsha Linga present here, thereby regaining his brilliance.
From that time onward, this place came to be known as Prabhasa Tirtha. Brahma, one of the Trimurtis, established the Brahma Shila here. At the request of the gods, Lord Shiva resides here in the name of Somnath.
This holy shrine was destroyed in 1025 CE by Mahmud of Ghazni, who plundered the immense wealth stored here. Later, the temple was rebuilt by Bhima, the ruler of Gujarat, along with King Bhoja of Malwa.
However, it was again destroyed around 1300 CE by Ala-ud-din Khilji’s general Alaf Khan. It was subsequently rebuilt by King Mahipala of the Chudasama dynasty. Thereafter, the temple was repeatedly destroyed by invading Turkic forces in the years 1390, 1490, and 1530, and again by Aurangzeb in 1701.
Finally, after India attained independence, the temple was reconstructed through the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
1000 Years of Somnath Temple
ndia’s Prime Minister highlighted the temple’s 1000-year survival during Somnath Swabhiman Parv (Jan 8-11, 2026), celebrating unbroken faith.
Architectural Marvel
The current temple follows Chalukya style with intricate carvings and a towering shikhara. Archaeological digs revealed pre-11th century foundations, confirming its ancient grandeur. The garbhagriha houses the sacred Jyotirlinga, drawing millions of pilgrims annually.
Symbol of Resilience
Somnath represents civilizational continuity, rebuilt post every invasion, from Ghazni to colonial times. Its 1951 reconstruction under Dr. Rajendra Prasad marked post-independence revival. Today, it inspires national pride amid 2026 commemorations.

జ్యోతిర్లింగాలో మొదటిది ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన ఈ క్షేత్రం గుజరాత్లో ఉన్నది. స్కందపురాణంలో ఈ క్షేత్రం గురించి వివరించబడి ఉన్నది. దక్షప్రజాపతి యొక్క పుత్రికలలో 27 మందిని చంద్రుడు పెళ్ళాడుతాడు. వారిలో రోహిణి పట్ల ప్రత్యేక ప్రేమ కనపరుస్తాడు. దీంతో కోపోద్రికుడైన దక్షుడు చంద్రుని శపిస్తాడు. దీంతో చంద్రుడు తన తేజస్సును, కళను కోల్పొతాడు. అప్పుడు చంద్రుడు రోహిణితో సహా ఈ క్షేత్రానికి వచ్చి ఇక్కడ ఉన్న స్పర్శలింగన్ని కొలిచి తన తేజస్సును తిరిగి పొందుతాడు.
అప్పటినుండి ఈ క్షేత్రం ప్రభాస తీర్థంగా పేరు పొందినది. త్రిమూర్తులలో ఒకరైన బ్రహ్మ ఇక్కడ బ్రహ్మశిలను స్థాపిస్తాడు. దేవతల కోరిక మేరకు శివభగవానుడు సోమనాధుడి పేరిట ఇక్కడ నివసిస్తాడు. ఈ పవిత్ర క్షేత్రం మహ్మద్ గజని చేత 1025లో నాశనం చేయబడినది. ఇక్కడ ఉన్న అపారసంపద ధనరాశులు గజనీ చేత కొల్లగొట్టబడినవి. తిరిగి ఈ దేవాలయం గుజరాత్ పాలకుడైన భీముడు మరియు మాళ్వారాజైన భోజుని చేత పునర్మించబడినది.
కాని మరలా 1300 సం॥లో అల్లావుద్ధీన ఖిల్జీ మొక్క సేనాధిపతైన అలాఫ్ఖాన్ చేత నాశనం చేయబడినది. తిరిగి చౌడసామ వంశస్థుడైన మహీపాల మహారాజుచే పునర్మించబడినది.
తరువాత వరుసుగా తురుష్కుల మూకచే 1390, 1490, 1530 సంవత్సరాలలో మరియు ఔరంగజేబ్చే 1701లో నాశనం చేయబడినది. చివరిగా స్వాతంత్య్రం వచ్చిన తరువాత సర్థార్ వల్లభాయ్ పటేల్ కృషి వలన పునర్మించబడినది.
