Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968) was an American Baptist minister and one of the most influential leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
August 28 is a significant date in connection with Martin Luther King Jr. because it is the anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered by King during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. This iconic speech, given from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States, which remains one of the most powerful calls for equality in history. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his struggle against racial inequality.
Tragically, King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. His legacy continues to inspire movements for justice, peace, and equality across the world.
