Armed Forces Flag Day is a national observance held annually on 7 December to pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice and service of India’s armed forces personnel. The day also aims to raise funds for the welfare, rehabilitation and resettlement of ex-servicemen, war-widows, disabled soldiers and the families of martyrs through the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.
History of Armed Forces Flag Day
The observance of Armed Forces Flag Day began in 1949, shortly after independence, when a committee under the Defence Minister decided to designate 7 December as the day to mobilise public support for the armed forces. Small flags in red, dark blue and light blue, representing the Army, Navy and Air Force, are traditionally distributed to citizens in return for voluntary donations.
Significance and Objectives
Armed Forces Flag Day serves three main purposes: rehabilitation of battle casualties, welfare of serving personnel and their families, and resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their dependents. It reminds citizens of their responsibility to support those who protect the nation’s sovereignty and encourages active participation through contributions, campaigns and remembrance events.
How Armed Forces Flag Day is Observed
- Awareness campaigns, cultural events and patriotic programs are organised by government departments, schools and social organisations to honour soldiers and veterans.
- Fund-raising drives are held across states and union territories, where people contribute to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund by purchasing flags, stickers and car pennants.
- Digital campaigns, social media posts and public messages highlight the sacrifices of the armed forces and invite citizens to donate and pledge support.

భారత స్వాతంత్ర్యం తర్వాత రక్షణ సిబ్బంది సంక్షేమాన్ని వ్యవస్థీకృతంగా నిర్వహించాల్సిన అవసరం గుర్తించిన కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం, రక్షణ మంత్రిత్వ శాఖ ఆధ్వర్యంలో ఏర్పాటైన కమిటీ సిఫార్సు మేరకు 1949లో డిసెంబర్ 7న “ఆర్మడ్ ఫోర్సెస్ ఫ్లాగ్ డే”గా పాటించాలని నిర్ణయించింది. సామాన్య ప్రజలకు ఎరుపు, గాఢ నీలం, లేత నీలం రంగుల చిన్న ఫ్లాగ్లు (సైన్యం, నౌకాదళం, వాయుసేనకు ప్రతీకలుగా) పంపిణీ చేసి, దానికి బదులుగా స్వచ్ఛంద విరాళాలు సేకరించడం ఈ రోజు ప్రధాన లక్షణంగా మారింది.
దినోత్సవ ప్రాముఖ్యత, లక్ష్యాలు

- రాష్ట్ర, కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వ శాఖలు, విద్యాసంస్థలు, స్వచ్ఛంద సంస్థలు కలసి దేశభక్తి గీతాలు, సాంస్కృతిక కార్యక్రమాలు, ర్యాలీలు, అవగాహన సదస్సులు నిర్వహిస్తాయి.
- ఆర్మ్డ్ ఫోర్సెస్ ఫ్లాగ్ డే ఫండ్ కోసం చిన్న ఫ్లాగ్లు, స్టిక్కర్లు, కార్ ఫ్లాగ్లు పంపిణీ చేసి, ప్రజల నుండి స్వచ్ఛంద విరాళాలు సేకరిస్తారు.
