Introduction
Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of Diwali – the festival of lights. The word Dhan means wealth, and Teras refers to the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartika. In 2025, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18. This day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, and Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda and health.
Significance and Legends
According to Hindu mythology, during the legendary Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean. Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a pot of amrita (nectar of immortality), symbolizing health and long life.
Another famous tale relates to King Hima’s son, whose life was saved from the god of death, Yama, when his wife lit numerous diyas and placed gold and silver coins near the door. The brightness distracted Yama, saving the prince’s life. This story inspired the Yamadeepdaantradition, still practiced during Dhanteras.
Rituals and Traditions
- Homes and workplaces are cleaned, decorated, and illuminated with diyas and rangoli.
- Devotees perform Lakshmi Puja and Dhanvantari Puja for prosperity and health.
- People buy gold, silver, or new utensils, believing these purchases bring luck.
- Special lamps are lit for Yamadeepdaan, which are kept burning all night to protect the household from negativity.
Modern Celebration
Dhanteras today is not just about buying precious metals — it’s about celebrating abundance, gratitude, and well-being. Markets fill with lights, sweets, and festive excitement. Many also observe National Ayurveda Day on this occasion, honoring Lord Dhanvantari’s gift of health to humanity.
