ప్రాథమిక నుంచి డిగ్రీ వరకు గ్వాలియర్ నగరంలో పూర్తి చేసి పోస్టుగ్రాడ్యుయేషన్ ను లక్నోలో పూర్తి చేశారు. చిన్నతనంలోనే ఆర్ ఎస్ ఎస్ పట్ల ఆకర్షితుడై సంఘ శాఖల్లో ప్రతి రోజు పాల్గొనేవారు. ఆర్య సమాజ్ , ఆర్ ఎస్ ఎస్ లలో రెండింటి భాద్యతలు స్వీకరించి అప్పగించిన పనిని ఏకాగ్రత తో పూర్తి చేశారు.

ఆర్ ఎస్ ఎస్ సంఘ్ చాలక్ గురూజీ గోవల్కర్ గారి సూచనల మేరకు దీనా దయల్ ఉపాధ్యాయ గారితో కలిసి జనసంఘ్ పార్టీని విస్తరించడంలో కృషి చేశారు. లాల్ కృష్ణ అద్వానీ, వాజపేయి గారు తొలుత రాజకీయ మిత్రులు, అనంతరం ప్రాణ స్నేహితులు, వారి అనుబంధం 5 దశాబ్దాలు కొనసాగింది. దేశ మొదటి ప్రధాని నెహ్రూ గారినే తన అభిమానిగా మార్చుకున్నారు. నెహ్రూ గారితో ప్రారంభమైన చెలిమి ఆ తరువాత ఇందిరా గాంధీ, రాజీవ్ గాంధీలతో కూడా కొనసాగింది.

1957,1967,1971,1977,1980,1989,1991,1996, 1998, 2004 వరకు మొత్తం 10 సార్లు లోక్ సభకు, 1964, 1985 లో రెండు సార్లు రాజ్య సభకు ఎన్నికయ్యారు. 1977లో దేశాయ్ మంత్రివర్గంలో విదేశాంగ శాఖ మంత్రిగా ,1996లో 13 రోజుల ,1998 నుంచి 2004 మొత్తం మూడు సార్లు దేశానికి ప్రధానమంత్రి గా పనిచేశారు.
