The tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century, due to soft soil that did not adequately support the structure’s weight, and worsened with the completion of construction in the 14th century. In 1990, the slope reached 5.5 degrees. The structure was stabilized by repair work between 1993 and 2001, which reduced the tilt to 3.97 degrees.
They could have put it in the right position, but then it would have lost the characteristic that made it so popular.
పీసా గోపురం 12వ శతాబ్దంలో ఇటలీలో పీసా ప్రాంతంలో నిర్మించారు. పునాదులు పటిష్టంగా లేనందున కట్టడం 90° నిటారుగా లేకుండా 4° వంగిపోయింది. గోపురం నేల నుండి సుమారుగా 183′ ఎత్తు ఉంటుంది. క్రింద గోడ చుట్టుకొలత సుమారు 8′ ఉంటుంది. చలువరాళ్ళు (marble) రాళ్ళు కట్టడానికి వాడారు. 14వ శతాబ్దానికి వాలు ఎక్కువై 1990 నాటికి 5.5° లకు చేరింది. 1993 – 2001 కాలంలో పునాదులు గట్టిపరచి వాలును 3.97° తెచ్చినారు. ఇలా మరమ్మత్తులు చేయడము వలన గోపురం కూలిపోకుండా నిలిచింది.
పునాదులు గట్టిగా లేకపోయినా కట్టడం పటిష్టత మరియు అక్కడి నేల స్వభావం కారణంగా చరిత్రలో 4 భూకంపాలను తట్టుకుని నిలిచింది.
