IIT Ropar – Hostel facilities

3rd and 4th years along with PG and PhD students get Single Rooms while 1st and 2nd year students get rooms for 2 people each.

This is an image of the three boys hostels. Each hostel has 2 wings, and have about a hundred rooms on each floor (both wings included) with 4 floors in total.

This is how the wings look from the inside. The open area on ground floor has great seating (the red seats you see in the images), sometimes club sessions are held there too. The rooms get enough air and sunglight because of this open structure. There are 2 lifts in each wing of each hostel.

Each floor of the hostels has a common area. The one above is our makeshift gym. Many are TV Rooms and have ample seating capacity for you to watch movies with friends anytime you want. Though nowadays the movie screening club just uses our Seminar Halls because of the stepped seating, recliner seats and large screen with high def projectors and audio. It’s really pretty close to a cinema.

Bathrooms have wooden stalls and modern showers. But the best thing about the hostels is the INTERNET!!

Illu Festival – IIT Kharagpur

Ilumination, popularly known as Illu, is a festival unique to IIT Kharagpur. It is inspired from the day of Diwali (the festival of lights) and is usually held on the day of Diwali itself. It is held as a competition among student halls. As part of the Illumination festival, all halls build vertical panels of bamboo (called Chatais) on which thousands of lamps (diyas) are mounted forming outlines of people or things; illustrating an event, or a place of importance.

The chatais may reach a height of 6 metres (20 ft), with nearly 20,000 lighted lamps. The lamps on the chatais are lighted with all other light sources switched off, to showcase the art-panels made by the flickering lamps. On the same day as Illumination, the Rangoli Competition is organised as an inter-hall event. Rangolis of exquisite detail and shading—measuring around 3.5 by 3.5 metres (11 by 11 ft) —are constructed using coloured powders, crushed bangles, and pebbles. Interplay of light and shadow and ambient music are part of the display. Every Diwali, IIT Kharagpur celebrates the festival of lights in a manner so unique that stands testimonial to every KGPian‘s journey in the land where dreams don’t lie. Illumination, popularly known as Illu, remains wide awake in every soul that has watched the event stand tall in every sense of its grandeur from the point of preparation to the moment of watching the flawless structure glowing in the dark instilling in all a sense of pride, honour, togetherness and accomplishment with time coagulating around you.

Campus life

IIT Guwahati is a part of the elite group of the ‘old IITs’ that are believed to be more reputed than the new ones. IIT-Guwahati campus life offers a colorful variety of opportunities to students. To interact with each other, the campus community is very open to ideas and sharing. Student diversity is one of the very important assets of its campus life.

The beauty of IIT-G campus is breathtaking, given its location in the lap of nature. A long walk through the beautiful woods and rolling mountains can be a panacea for any stress. Unlike most old IITs which are female-starved, IIT Guwahati has a better student gender ratio.

Gymkhana organizes various talks and seminars throughout the year, either aimed at a selected audience or at all students of the department.

INSPIRE TALKS: These talks are conducted under the theme INSPIRE that encourages and inspires the students of the department (especially the Freshers’ and sophomores) to get to understand and realize the scope and opportunities.

INTERN TALKS: In this interactive session, 3rd year students addressed one of the most prevalent questions in the minds of students in their sophomore year – Summer Internship. The prime objective was to guide the students into deciding a field of choice – be it academic, industrial or management – and provide the steps to get an internship for each. The senior students will share their various internship/research experiences, giving a clear insight about the prospects in the department.

Hostel life

Hostel life for Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur

After a bit of formalities like filling up the registration form, Verification of our counselling allotments, collecting our Medical book and some official work, the room keys were handed over to me. First year students generally get room on the basis of triple sharing.

The rooms are spacious enough for 3 students to stay comfortably. The institute will be providing you with a bed, study table and a shelf. You will have to purchase a mattress and other daily essentials which you’ll easily find as many temporary shops are setup during this time all around the campus.

So the next task was to arrange all my luggage and belongings properly and in the best possible way. A big thanks to my mom on this front as she was the one who actually arranged my room and I was just helping her with some small things.

So this was the look of our fully arranged room:

The room is well ventilated and you will not be feeling entrapped. We have two balconies…one in the front and the other one in the back.

View from the rear balcony. That’s the old block. We have 5 blocks in the hall and freshers are alloted the E Block (The most recently built one).

That’s the view from the front balcony.

Beleive me doing all this is not easy. You will get exhausted by the time all this is done. So after a small afternoon nap, we decided to take a tour of the campus. The campus is lush green and the positive vibe it gives out is truly magnific.

View from the classroom complex.

View from the Academic Block

So after a quick exploration of the campus we returned back and it was time for my parents to leave.

Now it was time for my first meal in the mess. It was too good. (Would have been better if they would have maintained the quality throughout the year🙃🙃)

meal in the mess.

Hostel life at IIT Roorkee

IIT Bio-Technology

When you land up for the first time in hostel, you are totally surrounded by fears.

  1. Locking things and keeping them at correct places so that they don’t get lost.
  2. Keeping a track of your clothes and having the fear you may lose them.
  3. You have to give clothes to the washerman, then hang them, check if they have dried, then pile them up in your almirah, AND all of this happens amongst your classes.
  4. As most of the IIT Campus’ are build amongst lush greenery, we often end up inviting mosquitoes and lizards to our room. It happened to my roommate twice in the first week that a lizard happened to enter his almirah.
  5. There are very few bathrooms and we fear to wait in a line in the morning for bath (The waiting line decreases gradually to zero, though)
  6. I luckily got a single room, but many of my friends are always in the fear that they may get their room locked when they reach, and this happens quite frequent too.
  7. Cleaning the room once and now is a burden in itself.
  8. Once a football came flying from the ground in front and hit my door real hard, man I was sleeping then and I just got shocked for real.
  9. You are never certain about the weather and it has happened that clothes get wet when it happens when we are back in LHC.
  10. Waking up by yourself in the morning is the biggest fear. We usually end up sending tons of messages to friends to wake us up in the mornin’.
  11. Sometimes dogs just end up in corridors!
  12. When you want to study for legit but can’t resist your friends crashing at your door. This happens the most. When we are up for a pending assignment or something, peeps just come crashing at door.

The syllabus of a B.Tech in artificial intelligence at IIT Hyderabad

Since Indian engineering curriculum is 40 years old hence NO Indian engineering institution produces any skilled-employable AI/ML professional. Also, since there are NO such internationally known AI/ML professionals in India hence NO Indian building can produce any such skilled AI/ML professional.

There is infinite demand of highly skilled AI/ML professionals in all the developed countries of the world, even without any school or college degrees, but it would take about 6+ years of computer programming practice to become this much skilled for

Difference between an IIT Hyderabad student and an IIIT Hyderabad student

IIT Hyderabad takes its admission on the basis of Jee Advanced ranks whereas IIIT Hyderabad takes admission on the basis of Jee mains ranks and on its own entrance exam also. Student quality is same exactly the same.

The average package of iit Hyderabad is around 12 Lakhs per annum whereas the average package of iiit Hyderabad is around 20–22 lakhs per annum .

IIT Hyderabad students enjoy the status of IIT whereas the students of iiit Hyderabad loves the placement. Both colleges comes under top 10 engineering colleges of India. Both are the institutes of national importance but the brand value of iit Hyderabad is more than that of iiit Hyderabad.

IIT Delhi Hostel for First year students

Always be the first person to reach your hostel room the first day 😛

This is the kind of room you get (Obviously it is cleaned. This is one of the other rooms I clicked which was not supposed to be occupied :P)

Interestingly, one of my room-mate was from Rajasthan and the other one from Bihar. Me being a Delhite, you can imagine the diversity in the room.

It was 1 PM (Lunch in IIT-D was from 1–2 PM) and we went for lunch in the hostel mess. Seeing the hostel mess at a glance was like nothing I had seen in real life or even movies. Seeing so many students have food together was just amazing.

This is snap of our hostel mess. It could seat up to 150 people at once. Again, it used to be in a much orderly manner. So, don’y judge from this picture 😛

Then, in the evening we were expecting for all of us to be ragged. Rather, it was a very friendly session with seniors from BSW (Board for Student Welfare. Every hostel had 2 students from second year appointed as BSW Representatives who were like the point of contact for every fresher). It was a fun session wherein they told us about out the things we should take care of in the first few days and the fun slangs used in IIT. They told us that the seniors are themselves in awe of us due to the strict anti-ragging policy.

After that, we went back to our rooms. It had been a long day and our lives had changed drastically. Soaking that feeling in, we slept. It was not a good sleep given it was the month of July and there was no cooler/ AC in the room (Something which we can’t live without now).

Bhawans! That is how IITR define there dwelling places on the sprawling IIT campus. These bhawans are legacy and they remind of us the glory this institute has had and of the renaissance it has witnessed.

Homes away from home are as modern as they can be. More importantly, though have spawned the cultures that make the campus an unforgettable experience. It’s here that midnight cricket tournaments, early morning sessions, community computer warfare and so many other things find expression.

Each hostel has a state of art Cyber Cafe, managed by students. All hostels are now fully Wifi connected, meaning that the Internet permeates the space we live in. And who could imagine life without midnight snacks at the Bhawan Canteens, especially after an intense or gaming session? And all this, in peaceful, clean, aesthetic environs, the likes of which very few places in the world can boast.

Almost every sport in gymkhana building is free for students(only some need a paid membership card). Taramani guest house is in front of Gymkhana and it also has a bus-stop exactly opposite to it.

IC&SR Building

Home of IAR and ICSR hall. Almost every lecture or seminar event in institute happens here. This building also has NPTEL hall, NIT pallakad office and many more official departments.

Academics at IIT Madras

The first two years at the campus might be hard but IIT provides all the facilities you would need to get ahead. The classes here take only 4-5 hours and the rest 19-20 hours are to be spent helping yourself grow.

You can study in that time, play any sport or take part in extracurricular activities. You can also become a part of the CFI (Centre For Innovation) to give shape to your imagination in the form of a product.

Hostel Facility

In your freshmen year, single room will be shared by two people. From second year onwards your will be alloted new hostels where most of the people are given are single rooms and some still have shared but bigger rooms. Also you can apply for hostel change at the start of the semester with valid reason.

Other than central library there is also your hostel library where you can find some good novels and chosen books over the years by your seniors. You can issue the book here for whole semester if no one needs it.

You will find a Music Room in almost every hostel. If you are a music enthusiast and have a good feel for playing instruments then you can try a hand over here.

You wont find a place in TV room during a cricket or a football match. This room has a television set (default is bravia) and a good sound system. Also, a subscription of channels in every language is a plus point. Friendship in IIT bonds up very fast over sports. And you have a general sports equipment room so that you have some active evenings playing with your friends in hostel quadi.

Himalaya Mess

Yes the mess. Three floored building with six caterers. You have an option to choose among the caterers. A reliable an option whenever you feel hungry. Timely meal routines with heavy breakfast makes up your day. Eatery near Himalaya – You can literally find everything here from Dosa to juices and pizza. One of the best place to have your intellectual discussions after classroom sessions.

Campus Cafe

The canteen in the academic zone, on the road between Central Workshop / CFI and the Hospital. Quick save for when you have a morning free slot and have missed breakfast. Tasty (and cheap) South Indian breakfast and lunch.

Saarang is the annual social and cultural festival of IIT Madras. It is a 5 day long festival usually in the second week of the year which receives a footfall of over 60,000+ people from over 500 colleges all across the country.

Sports Facility

IIT Madras believes that a healthy mind resides within a healthy body for which students can either exercise at the Institute Gymkhana or play games like Tennis, Basketball, TT or play cricket at the Chemplast Cricket Ground. You may also participate in various other sports at Manohar C Watsa Stadium or Sports Complex.

Student Legislative Council

The newly renamed Students’ Legislative Council (SLC), formerly the Student Affairs Council (SAC) was conceived of in the Students’ Constitution of IIT Madras, written in 1982, which was a pioneering move in its time. It was the first students’ constitution which allowed elections and which defined roles and responsibilities in a clear-cut fashion. Until then, selection for positions of responsibility had been carried out by the professors.

Life in IIT Madras is brilliantly awesome and one can never forget the experience who has lived there. The campus is huge and full of nature and wildlife. Rains add to its beauty. Students and some professors use bicycle to reach the classes and back to their homes. It is really enjoying bicycling under the sun and canopies of tall trees in the campus.

Then there are classes, professors are highly qualified, you cannot grasp all the topics. Haha! Study is done through ppts and on boards.

There are 3 messes in total. Mess food is manageable but it becomes boring when we eat daily in the same mess. There is an option of changing the messes every month and there is also choice between the north menu and the south menu. Food court option is also available. Apart from messes, there are several other outlets where you can fill your tummies.

Talking about other activities, there is a wide scope of everything here. Talks by eminent personalities, seminars, lectures, workshops etc. take place frequently in the institute. Students in great numbers participate in every competition. It also hosts South Asia’s largest cultural festival ‘Saarang’ which is a 5 day long fest that is held in the month of January every year. Students can be seen building some great projects in innovation center.

There are 22 hostels in total. Inter-hostel competitions take place too. Entry of girls is allowed in the boys’ hostel but not the vice-versa.

Nightlife is enjoyable and anyone can roam around the campus freely.

Founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College(BENCO) as a part of the prestigious Banaras Hindu University(BHU) which was established in 1916 by the enormous efforts of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya.

It became the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) in 1968 merging BENCO, MINMET(College of Mining and Metallurgy) and TECHNO(College of Technology).

After the first proposal in 1972, it was finally designated as Indian Institute of Technology(BHU) Varanasi in 2012.

It is situated in the main city of Varanasi – which is claimed to be the oldest continuous living city. In the junction of Uttar Pradesh – Bihar.

And this Varanasi is notorious (and famous) for its narrow galis, dusty roads and congested areas.

It is famous for its Ghats and their Post Sunset and Sunrise Aartis. It is also famous for its economic and traditional road-side eateries.

And it also has some Malls, but they don’t have cinemas like INOX, PVR and Cinepolis.

How is life at IIT roorkee?

Life at an IIT is always great, but at IIT Roorkee, it’s a special blend of a modern life and traditional values. History, it is said, is a great teacher, and given our glorious and long heritage of over 150 years.

The campus pours calm evenings where one is sure to find a guitarist strumming his strings along with the college canteen bustling with engrossed couples despite terribly scarce female population. Speaking of associations, every freshman finds welcoming relations from his seniors.

AVENIR is an annual event, where IITR aim for the students to thoroughly understand the global market and the challenges it presents. IITR also look forward to bring out the significance of the full understanding of the global business landscape and the localization needs of the markets in renewing and strengthening great businesses through good times and bad.

CONFLUENCIA is the flagship event of the Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee. Initiated in 2008, it served as a knowledge-sharing platform for the head of various organizations to impart their insights to the budding managers of the country.

COGNIZANCE is a vibrant technical festival was initiated in 2003, with an aim of providing opportunities to the student community to exercise its academic acumen and ingenuity and become a hub for groundbreaking ideas and solutions.

Exuberance is Annual Sports Festival of DoMS IIT Roorkee. The event gives a chance to both first and second-year students to show off their skills and prowess in different kinds of sports like Cricket, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cycling, Carrom, Snooker, Table Tennis, Volleyball.

THOMSO is a cultural festival held annually at IIT Roorkee. It is not only the largest youth festival of Uttarakhand but also one of the largest youth festivals of India. It has about 5000-6000 college students from all over India in attendance apart from around 5000 students of IIT Roorkee itself.

The competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities on campus keep the students on their toes. But everyone needs some time off, to relax and recharge . Clubs at IIT-R are the best place for this.

  • Hobbies Club
  • Photography
  • Electronics
  • Fine Arts
  • Gardening
  • Model Section
  • Philately
  • Star Gazing
  • Software Development Section
  • U.G. Club
  • PG Club
  • Alaknanda Club

Jawahar club house the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table.

The hobbies club also has sections devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. The clubs also have reading rooms with a plethora of newspapers and light magazines. Each of the clubs have a TV room with a seating capacity of a hundred-odd people providing a great atmosphere for watching the winning sixer or the not-so-interesting soap operas.

Physical recreation through games and sports has been an important part of the Institute since its inception. Games like football, cricket and hockey were introduced around 1870 followed closely by squash and boating. Today, the Institute has some of the best facilities in a number of games and sports and awards proficiency in 14 games.

Groups and Committees

The ubiquitous student groups are what set IIT Roorkee apart from the other techincal institutes in India, Here do the like-minded gather to work together toward a certain goal- be it getting out a magazine on time, or putting together a one-hour concert, or making a trip to a nearby village for social work. From togetherness comes success and this feature of life here, certainly adds spice to the lives of the students

How to reach IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati

From Guwahati Airport: Good news for freshers is, you will find 2nd year students sitting at a desk at the gate to guide your way. Low budget ( and my favourite route) : Come out. Walk straight about 300 meters. U reach VIP Chowk. From here u can catch the trekkers ( those red looking – gypsy kind of – public transport) which run till Jalukbari . It costs u 20/-. At Jalukbari find the big – black- auto rickshaws. You will have to ask around a bit before you find one going towards IIT. He will drop you at the rear gate of IIT – KV gate. Costed you 10/-. It’s very near to the boys’ hostels. If you are a girl/ guest, once inside, hire an electric auto who will drop u at your hostel / guest room. Costed you 10/-. Total : 40 /-. 🌼 High budget : Come out . Book a cab directly upto IIT. During day u can easily book one. At night, cabs are rare here after 10 pm.   From Guwahati railway station GHY: Very easy. IITG buses “ green valley” frequently run from a stand point ( very near to Guwahati railway station ) to the campus ( at the opposite bank of Brahmaputra) and it’s 100 % free for IITG students, freshers & guests. Again here too, you will find 2nd year students sitting on a desk at the main gate and will guide you to the stand point of green valley. Take a seat. Reach the campus . Takes about an hour. Show the security guy a proof that u r an IITGian. Have rest. First green valley leaves at 8 am from GHY. Last one leaves at about 9 pm.🌼 From Kamakhya Railway Station : Here you have to walk a bit to catch green valley bus. Walk out of the main gate. Walk parallel to the track on right. A ‘T’ point comes. Take left , walk and reach the main road. Wait for a green valley , wave hand to stop it saying u r from IITG. Board & reach the campus within 30 minutes. You can always book a cab directly upto IITG. That’s always an option. ________________ Here is how our green valley buses look : ( for people coming by train)

Personal advice: ( for people coming by train) Try catching a train that reaches Guwahati by 2 pm ( coz train gets late here by 5 hrs often) so that u can catch a green valley bus . Last bus leaves Guwahati at 9 pm. I have never paid to cabvalas.

How is campus life at IIT Delhi?

The campus of the Institute extends to an area of 320 acres. With many topographical features, imaginatively laid out with picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various nature and stature, and clean and wide roads, the campus presents a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty.

IIT Delhi provides science-based engineering education with a view to produce quality engineer-scientists. The curriculum provides broad based knowledge and simultaneously builds a temper for the life long process of learning and exploring.

“IIT Delhi is the dream of every science student. You get to live what actually is the ideal college life. You are totally independent there. The hostel life, academics, co-curricular, extra-curricular, events, fests, and everything just make it an amazing place to spend 4 years of your life.”

Campus Insights

The campus is mainly divided into three zones: the Academic area, the Girls’ hostel and faculty residence area and the Boys’ hostel area. There is one main building in the academic area that is linked to all the blocks and lecture theatres. A new MS is also on the verge of completion of construction. The CSE people have got a fully AC Bharti School for themselves but now as the Khosla building is ready, CS department is hoped to shift there. And not to forget, Textile, being the oldest department, boasts of an entire building devoted to textile engineering.

Top-notch faculty members, a rich list of eminent alumni, Guest Faculty and International Faculty, IIT Delhi has it all. Being one of the highest ranking institutes in India, IIT Delhi offers a plethora of opportunities to interact and learn from professors involved in various fields of academics that not only widens your perspective but knowledge base as well.

Cultural Activities

The Board for Recreational and Cultural Activities(BRCA) is an amalgam of all the cultural clubs of IITD including Debating, Quizzing, Literary, Dance, Drama and Fine Arts. All these activities are carried out very enthusiastically at IITD and BRCA is definitely doing its role to keep it so. Also, it is the BRCA that organizes Rendezvous, the annual cultural festival. Rendezvous is the largest college festival of north India with thousands of students coming from numerous colleges in and around Delhi for the extravaganza. And honestly, rendezvous does live up to all the hype that surrounds it! BRCA events have a rich history of inter-hostel competition but since 2013-14, all events have become non-competitive. Nevertheless the enthusiasm is still there.

There is a separate Board for Student Publications, BSP that prints regular magazines and newsletters. BSP also organizes Literati, a literary fest, in September.

BSW, i.e. the Board of Students Welfare, is a board of elected students that have the responsibility of representing students before the administration and put forward students’ needs. Also BSW assigns a mentor( a 3rd yearite) to each student. She/he is to guide you in academic as well as non-academic matters throughout the first year. BSW organizes a fun festival, Esperanza in September. Also there is zero tolerance towards ragging at IITD and you can directly approach your mentor for help.

Sports Facility

Facilities include, a cricket field with four turf wickets, four flood-lit cricket practice pitches, flood-lit hockey and football grounds, three flood-lit volleyball and two basketball courts, eight flood-lit tennis courts (four synthetic and four clay courts), tennis practice wall, two squash courts, one badminton hall, two table tennis halls with synthetic flooring, one weight-lifting hall, Olympic size swimming pool, kid’s pool, two multi-gyms, a flood-lit stadium with 400 meters athletics track, flood-lit jogging track and ancillary arrangements for all the games.

Residential Life

The ambiance of student life and activities on the campus is to provide an invigorating and creative environment which promotes independent thinking and introspection and leads the young students to become more aware of the consequence of their own actions. The campus also offers amenities like Staff Clubs, Hospital, Shopping Centre, Banks, Post Office, Telecom Centre, Community Centre, Stadium, Playing Fields, etc. There are eleven boys’ hostels and two girls’ hostels.

You must have heard from seniors that IIT rooms are like prison holes and all that. Well, to be honest, your rooms are not going to be very comfortable. Unless you are lucky enough to have been allotted Udaigiri or Girnar hostel, you have to deal with cobwebs and ‘microscopic’ room size. The mess food is almost completely edible. But these things won’t matter much once you get along and believe me in a matter of months, you would start loving your room. Also remember that the best way to enjoy your hostel life is to take part in as many activities as you can with your friends.

Places to hang out

In Campus

  • Cafeteria: Cafeteria is right in front of the MS. The food here is cheap and makes for a good quick meal. It’s a nice place for having on hot samosas.
  • Café Coffee Day: CCD is adjacent to the iconic Wind T (it’s an area under the MS architecturally designed to facilitate air flow through it). Wind T is the hub of activities, always abuzz with club groups, friend circles and couples. Also the CCD at Wind T has a nice ambience.
  • Night Messes: Majority of IIT-Dians are nocturnal creatures. And night messes at various hostels are there to cater to the students till 3 or maybe 4 in the morning. While Jwalamukhi is famed for nice Chinese, Satpura offers authentic roti-sabzi and Udaigiri boasts of the best Maggi at IIT.
  • Students’ Activity Centre(SAC): As the name suggests, SAC is the centre for a plethora of activities like indoor sports and gym as well as BRCA events. A new swimming pool is being constructed at SAC.

Outside Campus:

  • SDA Market: Just opposite the Main Gate, SDA is the favorite hangout place for IIT – Dians. Good cafes and snacks outlets surely help to serve the taste buds.
  • Ber Sarai: Ber Sarai is the nearest place to go for buying books for both IIT and JNU students. Its chaat and momo stalls are very popular.
  • Hauz Khas Village: Hauz Khas Village has a beautiful lake and historical architecture. HKV boasts of the some of the finest cafes and clubs of Delhi. Perhaps the best place for a romantic date.
  • Connought Place: It’s a favorite destination for foodies and shopaholics all over Delhi.
  • PVR Priya: Munch on a McDonald’s burger and watch a nice movie at this Saket theatre.
