మెరైన్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ (Marine Engineering

దేశంలోని సెంట్రల్ యూనివర్సిటీ.. ఇండియన్ మారిటైమ్ యూనివర్సిటీ.. నాలుగేళ్ల బీటెక్ మెరైన్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కోర్సును అందిస్తోంది. కోల్‌కతా, చెన్నై, ముంబై క్యాంపస్‌ల్లో ఈ కోర్సు ఉంది. ఈ కోర్సులో చేరేందుకు ఇంటర్మీడియెట్ ఎంపీసీ విద్యార్థులు అర్హులు. ఆన్‌లైన్ కామన్ ఎంట్రెన్‌‌స టెస్ట్ ద్వారా ప్రవేశం కల్పిస్తారు. దీంతోపాటు ముంబై క్యాంపస్‌లో ఏడాది వ్యవధి గల పోస్ట్ గ్రాడ్యుయేట్ డిప్లొమా ఇన్ మెరైన్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కోర్సు అందుబాటులో ఉంది.

ముఖ్యంగా మెరైన్ ఇంజనీరింగ్ కోర్సు ద్వారా ఓడల తయారీ, డిజైన్, ఆపరేషన్‌కు సంబంధించిన అంశాలపై నైపుణ్యం లభిస్తుంది. ఓడలు, వాటికి సంబంధించిన యంత్రాల తయారీపై ఈ కోర్సు ప్రధానంగా దృష్టిసారిస్తుంది. మెరైన్ ఇంజనీర్లకు మర్చెంట్ నేవీలో అవకాశాలు లభిస్తారుు. ఓడలకు సంబంధించి యంత్రాల పనితీరు నిర్వహణ బాధ్యత వీరిదే. ఓడ సముద్రంలో ప్రయాణిస్తున్న సమయంలో అన్ని రకాల ఇంజన్లు, ఎలక్ట్రిక్ మోటార్లు, ప్రపల్సివ్ ఇంజన్ల పనితీరుతోపాటు సంబంధిత సిబ్బంది పర్యవేక్షణ కూడా మెరైన్ ఇంజనీర్‌లే చూడాల్సి ఉంటుంది. ఓడ సురక్షిత ప్రయాణంలో మెరైన్ ఇంజనీర్ల పాత్ర కీలకం.

షిప్పింగ్ కంపెనీలు, ఇండియన్ నేవీ, షిప్‌యార్డ్‌లు, షిప్ ఇంజన్ తయారీ కంపెనీలు, షిప్ డిజైనింగ్, పరిశోధన సంస్థల్లో మెరైన్ ఇంజనీర్లకు ఉపాధి అవకాశాలు లభిస్తారుు. కోర్సు పూర్తయ్యాక నైపుణ్యాలుంటే.. సంవత్సరానికి రూ.4లక్షల ప్రారంభ వేతనంతో కెరీర్ మొదలవుతుంది. అనుభవం, నైపుణ్యం ఆధారంగా రూ.20 లక్షలకు పైగా ఆర్జించే అవకాశముంది.

The idea of starting the Marine Engineering course was mooted because of the age-old links of maritime trade and a long coastline, boosting the enormous marine and oil wealth. With the defense and protective needs of the Country, Visakhapatnam was long “destined” to become not only a viable Port City but also a center of learning of Marine Engineering. In 1965 with the concurrence of ministry of education, ministry of shipping and transport, the Government of India and the Directorate General of Shipping; Marine Engineering specialization was introduced in the form of ‘electives’ to undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering.

In 1971, Marine Engineering course was started with the approval of the Ministry of Education and AICTE. In 1981, again the course was restructured as Marine Engineering and Mechanical handling specialization to cater to the needs of the industry. The department of Marine Engineering was constituted in the year 1981. The department here is a shining example of the coordination that exists between the university and the local Marine and Shipping organizations. A training program for the engine/Deck cadets of Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) has been continuing since 1977 in the department.

With increasing onshore and offshore oil explorations activities and the Potential Wealth of Marine resources, a four year BE (Naval Architecture) degree course was started in the year 1981, to cater the needs of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Naval Science Technological Labs, National Ship Design and Research Center, Indian Navy and Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

Very recently, the course is restructured as NAME (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering) with the intake of 30 students keeping in mind the employability of the students and the market dynamics. More focus towards Naval Architecture without disturbing the content of Marine Engineering. Now the students are more eligible to work as Naval Architects who design the ships at various shipyards of both public and private sectors as well as Marine Engineers in the ships by obtaining a formal training. To work as Marine Engineer in the ship, Andhra University students have to take a formal training (MOT) either at Chennai or Mumbai. Andhra University doesn’t have DG Shipping approval (Which is essential) hence our students can not directly board the ship as 5th Marine Engineer.

Course Analysis:
Since 1981 Andhra University was the only university offering this course along with Cochin University in the entire south India. Now Indian Maritime University, AMET deemed University Chennai, IIT Kharagpur offering this course at undergraduate level. IIT Chennai is offering only PG Program.

Job prospects (Govt. and private) and job demand in the market

As far as campus recruitment is concerned, till 2012 Andhra University students got selected for both public and private sector. Each student used to leave the campus with two jobs in hand provided if the candidate is completed his/her course successfully.
